Village Quilts Store

Kitchen Kettle Village - Intercourse, PA

The folks at Kitchen Kettle Village purchased a property adjacent to their main one. It stands along the main street running through the village of Intercourse, PA. The original building on the property was a fairly substantial brick house built in the early 1900’s. Some sort of weird commercial addition had been tacked onto the back of it, probably in the late 1970’s or early 1980’s.

The new owners hired us to develop a plan to transform the existing structure into a retail store on the first floor, with four lodging suites on the second floor. An existing residential scale building, mixed use commercial code requirements and awkward existing additions to work around made for quite a head scratcher.

We opened the rear corner of the later building addition facing the main village of Kitchen Kettle. We created the look of a traditional corner store, complete with a corner building column and old timey looking storefront windows with transoms and illuminated sign boards. We maintained the main front porch and the look and feel of the existing brick house so it continues to address the main street through town. The upper levels of the building were reconfigured with added windows as required for the lodging units.

This building required a lot of work. Hats off to the owners of Kitchen Kettle Village for seeing the value in the renovation and preservation of this building. It could have easily been torn down and replaced by something much less substantial. A shout out also to Norman Graham Builders for constructing this successful project.
